Polar Bears in Churchill
What an incredible experience. To travel to the far north of Canada, on the icy shores of Hudson Bay and see these animals in the wild is something I will never forget. Everyone should do this!
I travelled on a charter from Ottawa. The flight was about 3 hours and by 10am we were on the tundra vehicles and looking for the bears.
In total, I saw 14 bears during the day. The great thing about this trip was the timing. The bears gather on the shores of Hudson Bay waiting for the ice to form. For many of the bears they had not had a substantial meal for some months. Once the ice does form, they set out and disappear from the shoreline. The ice was forming quickly on the day I toured Churchill and the bears were active, testing the ice to see whether they could start their journey and hunt seals.
They are big! Some of the males were bigger than the Grizzlies I saw in Alaska and Finland. They were not the least concerned with the people watching them and this meant that some of the bears came quite close.
This should be a ‘must do’ for any wildlife enthusiast. I will never forget this day. I hope you enjoy the photos from Churchill.
