North Queensland
Far North Queensland, Cairns to be specific, has been my home for the past 6 years.
Beautiful, wild, diverse. Some incredible and unique wildlife call this place home. The tree kangaroo has been a favourite. It is elusive but so rewarding when you stumble across one. My ‘go to’ has been the Atherton Tablelands and there is a spot near Yungaburra where I have regularly come across them. Yungaburra is best known for platypus sightings and I have been fortunate to come across many of them over the years. Smaller than most people imagine, they can be playful and have on occasion been known to put on a little show for those willing to be patient.
The other animal I love to see is the Cassowary. Numbers seem to be growing and they are more widespread than I originally believed.
A nature-lovers paradise. North Queensland is more than just the Great Barrier Reef (which is absolutely amazing).
If you are visiting North Queensland and want the best possible reef experience. I recommend finding your way the Daintree and specifically to Cape Tribulation. Ocean Safaris run a wonderful trip out to the reef. Just 20 minutes from the coast and on a clear day you can see the incredible Daintree rainforest on the horizon.
